Framasoft is based in France, and since we know how France is currently about GrapheneOS. It is not the best location for PeerTube and other open source projects to be in currently. So a move could be in order or at least decentralizing the development?

Also, not sure if it is just me but does it seem like it is last in how fast it grows, develops, and usage out of all open source social media/platforms?

Thinking and feeling like it would be beneficial for the project to move out of France and switch how it ran similiar to how Mastodon does. Owned and run by the people.

Should the project stay in France? Do you think it is fine how it is ran? In what ways can it improve? Long-term do you think Framasoft even as a non-profit can always be trusted?

Been working on open source as well so I know more people helping out would be beneficial but not fully familiar with PeerTube situation so asking here.

Thoughts?

Framasoft should move to USA! It would be the greatest. It’s the most beautfiul country in the world. I promise.

Did France government really say anything or was just one cop in one newspaper saying they don’t like GrapheneOS because they can’t crack it?
That being said, Fediverse and GrapheneOS are hardly comparable, and no company anywhere will try to cover for you in an investigation, in any country if the police shows up with an order to check acc creation info and logged IPs the service will comply or will be responsible for whatever you are using it to do.

Wasn’t Frances problem with GrapheneOS specifically that law enforcement couldn’t hack it? I don’t think this applies to Peertube. Framasoft has a non profit status in France which Mastodon has a problem maintaning (that’s why they keep changing countries), which offers a significant financial benefit.

Yeah, AFAIK, Peertube is inherently public so the peeping toms in the French police just have what they want anyway by design.

PeerTube grows terribly because videos are larger than posts and no one wants to pay for it.

Platforms like YouTube and Twitch tell you: “We host for free and you might earn serious buck!” Peertube tells you “Find an instance willing to host your collection and better pay them, too”. Go figure.

Solving this issue is not trivial, but some solution is necessary if you want to make it more appealing for high quality creators. Currently, I cannot enjoy using PeerTube as I rarely can open it up and find an interesting video in seconds like I can with YouTube.

How does this solve “No one wants to pay for it”? It’s just you paying to host instead of paying a guy to host it for you.

It’s honestly what content creators should be doing, so that they are in complete control. But self-hosting also costs money in some way.

But what does complete control help with putting food on the table? At least the professional content creators can do it professionally because they make money from YouTube and Twitch

True, but not every content creator lives on their YouTube ads revenue, if at all.

Also, there is nothing stopping them from posting their videos on multiple platforms.

it requires both technical experience and quite a lot of money if you want securely and reliably host hundreds of videos

Not really. It’s quite easy with PeerTube. The most technical part is installing PeerTube.

If you are hosting your own videos then you really don’t need to spend that much money on storage.

Note that if you are self hosting then you can control who can use it (only by you and/or other people).

If you are allowing other people to upload their video, then yes, storage is going to be a problem.

Not sure i understand the idea taking over an open source project when one can contribute or even fork it.

Anyway, it looks like France is quite Open Source friendly. For ex. the “DINUM” (gov. IT agency) has quite a few FOSS projects, finally could support financially Matrix, and there’s also quite a push for open data (https://www.data.gouv.fr/). About surveillance i suppose it’s quite bad indeed, but i don’t think it matters if the software has a licence like AGPL.

Finally, i doubt there’s a safe haven for privacy nowadays, but please prove me wrong :)

“usage out of all open source social media platforms”

Does that surprise you? Have you considered the different effort it takes between posting a message on Mastodon, taking a picture on Pixelfed or starting a thread on Lemmy/Piefed?

Making a video takes much more effort, sometimes hours. It’s only natural that the ratio of produced contented is not comparable to other “OpenSource social media platforms”

It’s open source software it’s developers are worldwide, as are the hosts. GrapheneOS moved their servers because France could compel the hosts to give up information. They couldn’t do the same for PeerTube because their servers and developers are already global. Just don’t host your personal content in France.
