That seems like the obvious place to put a subscription that won’t get people upset. Or maybe it’s in the presentation.

When HomeAssistant started a subscription, they renewed their commitment to opensource, added new remote features with obvious costs under subscription while still letting you do it yourself, plus made it clear this funded continued opensource development. I happily pay this and haven’t been disappointed. Did Plex fumble a similar opportunity?

If you’re feeling grumpy and pissed off today and snap at your neighbor, does everyone gun up and choose sides? No, nobody sane would jump to all out cul de sac conflict. They’ll be understandably annoyed, may no longer trust you, may not speak to you for a while, and you’ll be an outcast if you make a habit of it or don’t make up for it. That’s just messy relationships: they’re not always pretty, but can still happen.

Of course “sane” may not apply to the current US administration, but des to most of the rest of the world. Think of that crazy old man down the block spouting racist sexist gibberish from decades ago: most of us roll our eyes don’t want anything to do with it, and keep walking.

When I first encountered it, it was by hearing it. It took longer than it probably should have to recognize that when people talked about “engine x”, they meant “in-jinks”

Do you know what else eventually happened with cable? People cutting it by the millions when there was finally another choice.

It’s interesting that my family went from wasting time siting in front of a big screen tv paying massively for cable channels we never used, to cutting the cable and only paying for 2-3 streaming services at a time

But it’s even more interesting we continued down this path so our down time is dominated by small screens and somewhat interactive media instead of passively watching. If I stop paying for streaming media, my teens wouldn’t notice. It would just be the people here who would notice, as I complain more about doom scrolling and reaching the end

It’s not that easy to do something about it. Generally you’re taxed in the country where you earn money, but corporations have options in where they count income and where they count losses, to most benefit them.

A regular person in the US can’t do this because their employer reports salary income to the IRS as US income. What income do you have that you can claim was earned in a low tax country? Have you done all the legal work and paid appropriate taxes in that country?

Sometimes you’ll read about repatriating money. How do you legally use that money you have in a low tax country without incurring taxes bringing it back to wherever you are?

Why would banks care? If they’re getting a cut they care, otherwise it’s someone else’s business. Usually it’s the tax authorities who would care.

It’s hard to influence anyone to “destroy the structure”, they think they need it. However the “vast inequality” gets support from at least half the population

The problem is buying means nothing about whether it is legit or whether a company decides they want it. It only means you reserved it. Any disagreements are hashed out after the fact in court. It’s not a game that individuals can afford to win vs a corp

I realized long ago that my projects sometimes stall out partway through. However some things need to just work, regardless of where I am in a project. HA is a great example of something that manages itself (so less advantage to the VM) and that I want always available, so even if I decide to go down a route like you are, HA stays independent, stays available

My Mom watches horrible Hallmark stuff constantly. As far as I can tell, every movie has the same plot, they are low quality, etc. The thing is they are simple feel good movies for her. She finds them relaxing and gets good feelings from them, perfectly appropriate for “entertainment “.

If there is any parallel here, my point is that you don’t have to appreciate them for your Mom to. Why does it matter whether you agree with the movies or not: do you love her? Do you want to help her with entertainment that makes her feel good /relaxed/entertained?

Maybe. I do more DevOps these days, so tend to have many small changes that can’t even be tested without checking them in and running in CI. I’d have hundreds of “fix unit tests” commits alone
