You are free to learn ‘Xi Jinping thought.’ Doubt this is for the progress of humanity.
That’s not how Open Source works. Is this Chinese version of the AI likely biased? Yes…almost certainly.
But Open Source means that anyone can download and use the same source code and same technology to tinker with it and create one that isn’t biased and has nothing to do with the Chinese government.
The power of Open Source is that regardless of who creates the software originally, a million eyes are literally looking at the code. It’s nearly impossible to hide any shenanigans.
Exactly. This is the good thing about federation. If you don’t like the community you’re in, move to another one that better aligns to your values. No one’s speech is “limited”, but other instances aren’t forced to listen to you unless they want to.
Once Kdenlive got its stability issues sorted out, I was shockingly impressed with just how good it’s gotten. I still wouldn’t put it against DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro or anything, but it sits along with Inkscape and Blender as a great example of what Open Source is capable of in a professional setting.
In Russia, Linux forks you!
Okular is great. Kate is amazing. Kdenlive is BY FAR the most advanced FOSS video editor. I’d easily put Kdenlive above Krita, but that’s because of my particular use case.
The good news is that almost universally, women vote in greater numbers than me. So on average its still breaking to the left.
I want to say the Natron compositing software, but I could be misremembering.
I seem to recall it losing it’s only maintainer and therefore being updated or maintained anymore. I want to say this was back in 2018, but since it’s not a piece of kit I use often, I don’t really think about it enough for it to stick in my head. Anyway…point being. It posted a fairly large update in 2022 and has been doing updates since then.
I think the current economic and political system is failing a vast majority of Americans and like other authoritarian demagogues in the past, Trump misattributes that problem in ways that resonate with the bigotry and racism that exists in American culture.
You just explained in one sentence what I bumbled my way through in four paragraphs. Well written, my friend.
A lot of old-fashioned “good old homegrown” folks who feel that the world is changing and the economy is leaving them behind. Think of coal towns, mid-west mining towns, etc…
Insert a republican who tells them enough times that it’s not the fault of big business screwing literally everyone over, it’s actually the fault of the immigrants/LGBTQ+/Mulsims/Blacks (insert marginalised group of choice here) coming and taking what should rightfully go to Good Honest Working Folk/Christian Evangelicals (Insert the group you’re trying to court here) and then promise to change that.
The low-key greatest quote came from LBJ in an off-hand remark to an aide. Not even from a speech.
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
True then. True now. And true internationally. There is no country where the Conservative Right Wing doesn’t play by that exact rulebook.
Good god, why not just use Gnome?
Yeah, not a high-end business.
You are incredibly naive.
I mean, true…but I don’t think the average user is paying for the service rather than they’re paying for not having to worry about setting up everything needed to get syncthing working.
I don’t consider myself a luddite in any way, but within five seconds of reading syncthing’s install instructions even I basically just said, “yeah…no.” And I say that AS a nearly 12 year semi-advanced linux user. It’s not that it’s difficult. But difficult enough to not be worth it for the average person.
Do they? Or are they funny TO YOU because you were part of that original audience?
If you put a kid in front of a 30 year old episode are THEY going to think its funny?
Comedy has changed in 31 years. So has humour in general, and so has writing.
The Simpsons is never going to be the same as it was over the seasons because that’s not how culture works. Meanwhile, the reviews are mostly coming from long time viewers who lament that it’s not like it “used to be”.
Shows change. Get over it.
I used Crucial brand in both my desktop and my laptop upgrades a few years ago (I don’t remember the exact model…mx500 maybe?) And I haven’t had a single issue.
Absolutely rock-solid.
There are two types of Open Source users; those of us who understand and live by the ethos of FOSS, and users who just want to use a software that they don’t have to pay for and don’t care or understand the underlying ideas behind it.
That second group is the group who, no matter how many times they hear it explained to them, will refuse to believe that “free” doesn’t necessarily mean “no-cost” and therefore develop an expectation of “free” and decry that you’re not allowed to sell your software because it’s open-source, and even asking for donations is forbidden, when in reality neither of those things is remotely true.
Far more important than anything is to change the perception of Open Source to something like value ware; If you value the use you get from the software, pay an amount that you feel is fair. If they can’t afford it, that’s okay, but if they can, then the expectation needs to be that they DO. Even just a few bucks.
Long time Bitwarden user. Never been steered wrong. One of the few apps that I pay for premium not because I need the extra features, but because I value it enough to support the devs financially
I’ve said for years that the very last power we have as consumers is the ability to turn off our internet and still be able to use our devices. That is my minimum expectation of any company.
Fridge needs an internet connection, fuck you. TV won’t work unless it’s connected to the internet, fuck you.
But most especially (and this is why I moved to Linux originally), computer needs to always be connected to the internet even if all I’m doing is opening an office program that has nothing to do online? Go fuck yourself.
The ability to unplug my ethernet cable and still be able to use 99% of my computer with the exception of email and a web browser is the absolutely most basic human right left to us.
I don’t know about that, to be honest.
I don’t have any hard data to back me up, but anecdotally I find that most FOSS software I use is headquartered in Europe. Quite often Germany. There are many maintainers from all over the world, but I feel like (again…in my experience) Europe has always been bigger into starting such projects.
