  • I hear you, but I disagree. My people are great at slacking me or each other when they need stuff. We have a great collaborative atmosphere. They set up meetings with each other and with me as needed, and I’ve heard over and over that they really like that. I have weekly 1:1 meetings with each of them, and usually we hang up after 15 minutes because they know what they’re doing and can get back to it.

  • It’s why I left academia. You aren’t rewarded for being a good scientist. You’re rewarded for being good at understanding funding trends and playing the nepotism game. Grant writing is less important than talking to program officers and having big names write letters for you, and have your readers know those names.

However I’ll say that after spending 5 years in industry, these people have no fucking idea what they’re doing and it’s hilarious. Higher quality of science in academia. But I’m getting paid now.

  • Let’s say I’m a carpenter, and occasionally I open up a cad program and draw up a wrench or lathe chuck and have it cut out of sheet steel. Yes, I did some engineering but I’m not really an engineer.

Likewise let’s say I’m an artist. Maybe I write code now and then to program my automatic paint mixer or whatever.

    Code to build something: engineer

    Code to use something: programmer

  • Bye@lemmy.worldtoAntiwork@lemmy.mlI sure as hell don't.

Pretty sure in the old days, when there were fewer people, you could just fuck off into the forest and build yourself a cottage. If your feudal lord found out you’d be in trouble, but they didn’t have satellites or whatnot to track you down.

We have this weird unwritten assumption that the cost of technological advancement (esp medical) was our own domestication. That we sacrificed freedom and privacy for health and safety. I wonder if that’s really the case, or if it’s some bullshit post hoc justification
