Humans can do something, doesn’t mean humans only do that thing and nothing else.

Humans have many models of the world running in different modes in parallel, enabling us to make sense of things other than just process language and come up with plausible sounding answers within the rules of a given language.

Our understanding of concepts is different than how we process language, demonstrated in that there are perfectly intelligent people who can’t communicate using spoken or written language (including sign language) but can do so using other methods which demonstrate language processing isn’t essential to our intelligence.

The way we learn information and integrate it into our neural network is vastly different than how we train our artificial models using machine learning. Even if we just take language processing, we definitely don’t learn by reading the entirety of written human language many times over regardless of what language it’s written in, until we can understand how it’s underlying mechanics work so that we can form plausible structures of word-chunk strings without necessarily understanding the concepts behind the word-chunks.

That sounds nothing like a human.

LLMs are “generate something that sounds like it would answer the prompt” machines. Nothing more and nothing less.

Through that lens, they are a lot less impressive, a lot less frustrating and also a lot more fun.

I’d say it’s exactly as productive as saying “It’s no big deal if Meta joins the fediverse, It’ll be fiiiiiine”.

We should watch everything very carefully.

The problem here isn’t talking to Meta or Meta making a federated platform.

Nobody can prevent Meta from doing that anyway.

The problem is the need to push against the insistence of Meta to keep these meetings off the record. It’s against the entire philosophy of something like not only fediverse but FOSS in general.

If Meta wants good faith, they have to show it first.

Notice that in the email, Kev gives his guidance as to the matter. Do whatever the fuck you want as long as you put people first and make a product for the purpose of serving them.

This should be the attitude everyone should have first.

As long as any dev is taking this approach, Meta included, I’m supporting them. If someone is secretive about their intentions about a public service which is not a for profit endeavor inherently, I’ll have a hard pass too.

I think (and hope) so too. Some pro leniency stances from mastodon bigwigs got me a little worried, that’s all.

They will drown us out even if they don’t want in that case. Them just using the service normally will flood all our feeds with posts from their service based on the sheer number of them.

I recently started studying social psychology, and sadly the main takeaway from my initial venture into the field is a confirmation of how unaware and automated the average person is.

Middle managers, marketers and the average customer are all caught up in a perpetual feedback loop, constantly enabling each other’s addictions. It doesn’t help that these demographics overlap as managers and marketers are customers of other marketers and managers, turning the feedback loop into a vicious cycle.

We need deliberate efforts to archive everything efficiently.

We also need a way to decouple everyone’s personal info from publicly available information about them, keeping in mind that not all publicly available information is intended to be that way.

Storage ain’t cheap and it definitely ain’t infinite.

This is a way harder problem than “the internet” being a bit more mindful can solve easily.

Not to absolve any companies from responsibility or anything.

I nuked my twelve year old account yesterday and I’m literally not even sad. That joke of an AMA sealed the deal for me.
The best part for me personally is, I got an excuse to finally migrate to fediverse. I’m joining a discussion on lemmy from kbin while following stuff from mastodon and beehaw.

It’s nerdy and fun. Also, interestingly, feels more reliable. You don’t like the people running one service, did the owner turn out to be an utter sociopath? Go, make an account on somewhere better suited to your style and keep engaging with the same communities, maybe at the cost of a different UI experience. It’s much preferable to losing an entire platform to the whims of a few at the top.

I don’t think they’ll cave in, and honestly I don’t care what they do.

People like us made reddit what it is, and we can make a home somewhere else one way or the other.

It’s time we take the internet as a whole back from the billionaires and their soulless venture capital firms anyway.

Make internet nerdy again, I always say.

It would be good to have a list of subs going private. It might incentivize other subs to join in protest.
