  • I explain fast boot to people by saying “for some reason Microsoft went and made the Shut Down button not actually shut down your PC, it really just puts it into a ‘deep sleep’ mode, and to their credit, it lets them say that boot times are faster… But it also means that in order to FULLY restart the PC, you have to click restart… I know it’s a pain”

Usually I get looked at like I’m from another planet, but that reaction means they’ll probably remember it later.

  • I’m able to get a lot of gear secondhand through my job, so I’ve got:

One 2u Intel server running proxmox in a ‘cluster’ (circa 2013ish. Added RAM and upgraded the CPU/storage.)

One Intel nuc with an i7-7th gen as the other host in the cluster - only one VM is set to fail over between the two if needed.

    VMs:

    • Plex
    • 2x PiHoles (one of these is the failover VM) (these also have a few docker containers like Uptime Kuma.)
    • Windows arr box (I know it’s blasphemy but I felt more comfortable doing that stuff in windows)
    • anything else I want to mess with because the server really doesn’t run that hard.

    Network:

    • Sonicwall TZ 300 (incl a perpetual VPN license)
    • Unifi 24 port switch (it’s gigabit and POE but doesn’t output enough power for the…)
    • single Unifi AP.

All acquired over the last couple years for the low low price of “it was going into the trash anyway”

  • Honestly, I completely agree with the sentiment, although in this particular case OP just asked “upgrade to 11 or Linux?” While indicating that they already have some degree of comfort with Linux after having it on a laptop, so the Linux advocates in this thread have a bit of a leg to stand on in this case.

However: when there are questions like “how do I do X in Y software on Z operating system” it’s completely valid to be frustrated with the evangelists who come out of the woodwork and say “just use this other OS” because it completely misses the point of the question.

And that goes for Windows, Mac, and Linux evangelists.

  • Lemmy as a platform is built on FOSS. There are going to be Linux/FOSS advocates all over here.

I say this as primarily a windows admin who recently started diving into Linux.

The “real answer” is that Windows 10 is supported until October 2024. You have until then to make your decision or switch to an alternative because after that, W10 won’t be getting more updates and you risk running an unsecure system at that point.

  • I’m sitting on a hand-me-down Intel server with a 24 core CPU, 96gb of RAM, and a combined 13.5TB of storage space.

    Currently hosting:

    Redundant pi-holes - DNS/Adblock

    Plex - Streaming service 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

    Uptime Kuma - uptime tracker

Cloudflare proxy - secured external access to my environment sans VPN. It’s set up with session tokens and 2fa via email. I’d like to lock this down further but I’m using the free option right now.

Ubiquiti wireless controller - I also have a hand-me-down AP, and I’m using it to improve wireless signal in my house.

I’d love some recommendations for different things to host too. I don’t think a Lemmy instance is in the cards for me ATM though.
