The funniest moment has to have been when I Googled “9 minute 34 second Youtube video” and there was at least one video literally titled “9 MINUTES AND 34 SECONDS TIMER COUNTDOWN [574 seconds - 9:34]” and the video was 9 minutes 49 seconds long. I proceeded to Google different numbers of seconds looking for one that hit the perfect number and literally none of the videos, despite seemingly hundreds of videos of very specific times happened to fall on the 9 minute 34 second mark. Like, what insane world is happening in the great depths of Youtube where people spend hours posting completely arbitrary timers on Youtube, but specifically avoid ones that are 9 minutes, 34 seconds in length. I felt set up. I was rolling in laughter. 10/10 would spend my night Googling Youtube timers and overfeeding an emoji chicken again.

God, this is tangential to your point, but car and housing aesthetics have gotten terrible. Everything is BIGGER BIGGER BIGGER. People need to buy huge fucking hulked out monster trucks now for their suburban ass lives so they can make sure to fit their entire home when they commute an hour to work in soul crushing traffic. And they absolutely NEED their giant ass monstrous mcmansions. How can they survive without the extra dozen rooms that they can fill with more cheap bullshit? And don’t get me started on color. Houses are all beige, grey, monotone terrible. Cars are silver, white, grey, black. There’s no color anymore. It just feels like what’s the point? Why bother trying when this is what success looks like. We have this beautiful planet and this is the shit we fill it with. I’m sorry. /endrant

My grandma fell for a scammer that was pretending to be one of her grandchildren stuck in a jail in Mexico over a mixup. No AI voice or anything, just an actor and a vulnerable 90+ year old woman. She sent the scammer $10,000. I cannot fucking begin to imagine what AI is going to do to the scamming industry.

Okay, so think of every website that is part of the “Fediverse” (aka uses “ActivityPub”) as just being different ways to display the exact same data. Sometimes their data works really well between two of them and sometimes it’s a bit more awkward. Lemmy and Kbin are both trying to imitate the “forum-style” software that Reddit uses, so they integrate really well with each other. Same data, slightly different UI. Mastodon, on the other hand is imitating Twitter. So trying to read Mastodon in Lemmy is like trying to read a Twitter feed as Reddit threads. It’s messier. Kbin seems to be trying to find a way to better display Mastodon-style threads within their UI. Otherwise, I think the big picture way to understand the difference is just that it’s a matter of UI and which one you prefer more.

Today I tried Googling something about following kbin magazines on lemmy and got 0 relevant results on the first page. Then I entered the same search on DuckDuckGo and the first few results were all relevant to my search. Finally I decided to make the permanent switch to DuckDuckGo. Google has been undergoing enshitification for a long time now. Ever since I started needing to include Reddit at the end of all my searches. Since I no longer want to include Reddit in my searches, I need to find a better search engine in general and hopefully DDG can be that.

I’m 90/10 on it being YouTube. I mean, they’ve already shit the bed plenty in the past. But with all the fediverse stuff picking up steam, Peertube is just sitting there waiting to enter the discourse.

Ahhh, I completely missed that news among the API pricing bullshit. I guess I was so focused on the fact that they’ve basically just nuked third party apps, that I didn’t notice that even if they reversed their shitty pricing, they also killed NSFW content on those apps.

I feel like the server owner matters more than the platform itself. Which is to say that while I’m also not a fan of how far left the lemmy devs are, I have found some lemmy communities to be more in line with my values. I imagine if lemmy grows at all we’re eventually going to see many views represented. So I think whether to use kbin or lemmy should really come down to aesthetic preferences. I personally prefer the look/feel of lemmy, but I respect anyone who prefers kbin. It’s pretty cool that we can communicate across platforms. Really shows the power of ActivityPub.

I’m a bit OOTL on this I guess, but what NSFW policy changes are you talking about specifically? I was under the impression that they’ve stayed committed to continuing to allow NSFW content. I can’t seem to find any headlines mentioning any changes with all this API nonsense.

With that said though, I did see Huffman respond to a question in his AMA in a negative sounding way towards NSFW content, so that’s ominous. Also, I’ve heard that Reddit has recently been cracking down on subreddits with inactive moderators and not allowing appeals, with a specific target aimed at NSFW communities. Is there anything more specific that has come out lately with the API changes? Or are we talking more generally about their bans on subs like /r/WatchPeopleDie and whatnot?

A fitting death knell for Reddit that their CEO would have an emergency AMA go down as one of the worst ones of all time. This week is going to be one for the internet history books. I’m really looking forward to Monday.
