My utility gives a 50% credit on excess generation. Thing there is the utility is still the one taking responsibility for having the capacity and scalability to respond to variation in demand and production. When I was getting quotes, adding storage would have doubled the cost of the system for a day or two worth of storage. Probably would cost double again to have a system that would keep up through the winter.
Something kind of unique about UnRaid is the JBOD plus parity array. With this you can keep most disks spun down while only the actively read/written disks need to be spun up. Combine with an SSD cache for your dockers/databases/recent data and UnRaid will put a lot less hours(heat, vibration) on your disks than any raid equivalent system that requires the whole array to be spun up for any disk activity. Performance won’t be as high as comparably sized RAID type arrays, but as bulk network storage for backups, media libraries, etc. it’s still plenty fast enough.
It’ll take some time, but I think we’ll get there. Lemmy kind of feels like Reddit did to me when I first started using it. Some cool memes, some simple commentary on big news events, cat photos, etc… The biggest thing missing is the critical mass that allows some of the niche communities to come together and be reasonably active. I think Lemmy also needs some refinement on the back-end. Things like user-level blocking of instances(just because I don’t want to see something doesn’t mean I think it needs to be completely defederated), something equivalent to multi-reddits to browse sets of communities/instances, maybe a method to publish/subscribe to user’s blocklists. Can definitely feel the beginning of something awesome, hopefully it works out for a while.
That’s fair, but some don’t want to be able to swap out the batteries on demand, we just want to be able to replace a worn one every few years for less than $100. USB power is so ubiquitous these days that having access to quick charging isn’t an issue for most people, and Qi is pretty convenient.
I think it’s telling that most manufacturers won’t do warranty for water damage despite advertising a suitable IP rating. From a legal standpoint that seems to show that the above clauses wouldn’t apply, and if the manufacturer did want to use those clauses to get around the removable battery thing then they’d probably have to start accepting water damage as covered by warranty.
This is entirely regional though. The further you are from the equator, the more seasonal variation there is in sunlight levels, and heating/cooling loads. Around here our solar production is minimized during the season when our energy needs are maximized. We also don’t have variable rate billing, though we only get partial credit for excess generation, so battery storage will never pay for itself until something changes.
