  • I mostly hate AI but constantly try to find actual usecases for it past the hype.

I have made a VST audio effect plugin where I used AI as coding assistant, set up different local AI things, like fabric to get summaries from youtube videos, autogen where I have been testing AI agents, LM studio/Ollama local server etc.

I also use local AI to make instrumentals out of songs for singing practice (UVR).

These things said I’m still bit unimpressed with gen AI. Like sure as tech savvy person I find uses but don’t think any of those are particularly revolutionary as is claimed.

Why I’m on this community, like any other AI community is to follow any developments as I continue this search for actually good use cases. With many things I just don’t find AI reliable enough, or if it’s something I’m good at, I rather use my old non AI workflows.

  • Well maybe, micro work is really dehumanizing and cognitively rough. I hear some US inmates do work at McDonalds and if I had to choose between that and microwork, and if time I spent working was the same with both options, I would take the fastfood job any day. At least have done that before irl so I know what to expect.

I’m ADHD in IT job, and my mind would explode if work I did with computer was just unskilled datasorting job.

But I do know US inmates have basically slave conditions. But I read a book about microwork and it sounds like psychological torture to me. Like what they do in Severance.

(Work without worker is the book)

  • My ass probably could appreciate real performance if I was into audiobooks overall, I just like books as books. I’m not exactly happy about all content being replaced with AI slop. However I don’t think spotify cares, if something is cheaper they will go for it, just like other corpos.

Oh well I think they will be losing as well, people don’t even really need the audio book providers anymore, since they could just do AI ebooks themselves if they just have the text ebook.

  • I’m a bit disappointed to the practical uses, but I still get some value out of AI. I sometimes use chatgpt to tweak existing SQL scripts at work, and as a trouble shooting assistant. Also I use this tool ultimate vocal remover to extract stems from songs, mainly to make myself instrumentals to practice singing over. Those are really only things I do regularly, despite trying different self hosted AI tools. Most are cool but not very useful.

  • Great thread, although I tbh don’t even want alternatives for most of them.

    Lemmy, sure.

Discord, would be nice but until I get my friends and servers to move to something else, not gonna work.

Facebook, I don’t ever want to use anything like it even if it was open source.

Mastodon, I don’t want to use it despite being fedoverse cause it tries to be like Twitter and I hate Twitter.

Pixelfed, I don’t really want to use anything like instagram and even if I did, not relevant until people I want to follow use it since I wouldn’t post myself.

Tictoc, I would rather scoop of my eyeballs with rusty spoon than use it, no matter if it would be federalized.

Others not mentioned I don’t care enough to know how they work. Still, I support the sentiment of making fedoverse alternatives for things, although I personally only need lemmy and discord to get my dopamine fix.
