Oh definitely that the next couple of weeks will be spent preparing for a new wave. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the reason why Lemmy.ml was down. Yes I know that it was because of a server migration but, that server migration also didn’t happen for no reason ;-)
The first migration wave to Mastodon was very bad. I still remember, that following a person was nearly impossible. Not to mention the fact that, even if you could follow someone, it didn’t automatically meant their messages ended up in your feed.
I know for example that version 0.17.4 of Lemmy (that was released 2 days ago) already has some database optimizations.
Ejecting the current mods, is kinda like going nuclear. It will damage the trust Redditors have in a subreddit. However, should Reddit do that, then I would imagine they will do that on a larger subreddit and a consequence of that, that news will spread like wildfire. That in turn will, most likely, cause moderator walkouts.
I know current Reddit management is acting like they are stupid. That doesn’t mean that they are THAT stupid.
But that’s just my 2cts.
Edit: grammar be hard yo.
I’m not sure the ‘like email’ thing helps. Email is confusing and not what most people use to connect with others. I don’t know anyone who met via email.
In my experience it at least helps in the sense that, when people ask “why are there more then 1 site?” ? And up to a certain degree you use that to explain the concept of federating.
In theory, I agree with you! A 100%, but the problem is that currently Lemmy doesn’t support migrating your profile to a different server. So that already slightly complicates things. So from the get-go they are forced to make choice. A choice which isn’t clear, what potential consequences are and the fact they currently easily migrate to a different server, obviously doesn’t help.
“Like email” is basically the same description I’ve been using to explain it to non-tech people.
Long story short, onboarding needs to get better. But that also applies for other Fediverse projects (like Mastodon or Friendica).
I just also tried this from the EU (NL to be exact). The moment I disable IPv6 it works, if I re-enable it, my OS prefers to pick IPv6 over IPv4 and thus I get a 502 error again.
After doing a WHOIS, it appears that Lemmy.ml is hosted on OVHCloud.
In short, yes it will take longer to “catch up”.
The longer answer, be patient. This is an issue that will be resolved. I’m sure that the admins are doing their best to get the instance up & running ASAP.
From my experience during the great Twitter migration to Mastodon, you saw the same thing. Especially the “main instance(s)”, mastodon.online and mastodon.social in this case, were overloaded to the brim. After a day or two, the sysadmins and developers were able to stabilize the instance.
The sysadmins in this case were responsible to keep the servers up and running (and scale up where needed). The developers because their code hasn’t been “battle tested” for this level of interaction. So changes were needed, to optimize and squash bugs.
I hope this helps 😊
Edit: fat fingers, ie fixed typo
Very very likely that they will get defederated in a day. Most people will most likely interpret it as a Meta’s way of gathering more data.
Tbh, I totally forgot that Ohanian left Reddit like 10 years ago 🤦
You just have to (encourage others to) register on an instance with less than, say, 2000 active users. I think that’s already taking care of most of the issue.
Yes and another thing that also doesn’t help is that Mastodon currently does not (yet) support migrating over previously posted content. So if you migrate from one server to another, your old profile does show “user migrated to X”, but I think people are a bit afraid to leave their old posts behind.
Oh sweet, sweet irony.
Dude, that looks great! Awesome job!
I think it would be awesome, if you can get this merged into the UI of Lemmy! That way all users (not just the ones that know about this) can benefit from it.
Thank you! Subscribed 😄
Yeah I totally get what you mean. Video is in that regard binary (it works or it doesn’t). Audio on the other hand is very subjective, it works but it very muffed or very screamy.
Hehehe, I can definitely see what you mean. Doing stuff in your spare time is fun, but the moment it it becomes a “must do” thing… It’s like doing your taxes.
Yes I am a man and yes, dev work feels like a vacation to me. 😅
But in all honesty, I still do sound engineering but only as a volunteer in a small local venue about twice a month. That’s fun, no stress, just doing things I love to do. Meeting cool people, making sure the crowd enjoys the show. Fun stuff.
Oh man… For me, that would like #goals.
In my time as a sound engineer, I learned to say no. Compared to sound engineering (as in, live sound engineer), being a dev is a walk in the park.
No more 16 hour work days, no more tours with getting only 6 hours of sleep each night. No stressing out over a technical issue 15 minutes before show time. I could go on and on :P
As a fellow Dutchy… my current place is the first place I ever lived in that came with a combination oven and microwave.
Previously I’ve always had to supply my own microwave / oven ;-)
