  • You’re right. The other side of that is I did a little contract work for a company that is working on software for unmanned commercial flights.

Those guys actually made me feel better. They were all super smart, meticulous, and incredibly good at their jobs. It was the first environment I’ve ever been in where I felt like I could just barely keep up. I always felt one commit away from fucking things up. So I moseyed on down the road as soon as the thing I was contracted for was finished.

It was such a cool job and they offered me a permanent place. I just couldn’t feel behind every single day for the rest of my career until my system destroyed people’s lives.

  • I worked at an MSP for years and had clients who would send it back and forth that way to each other. The most common were medical practices, but banking wasn’t far behind.

Fax was considered secure because you could lock up the fax machine physically.

My favorite setup was a medical practice that dealt with stomach issues, including colon cancer, and their neighbor in the same building who was a pathology lab. They both had the PDF to fax and fax to PDF servers set up to send back and forth when someone could just walk 50 feet and hand over paperwork.

  • Yep. Toxic masculinity wants us to work ourselves to death without complaining to anyone. So our mental health is in the fucking toilet. If you’re not working enough, you’re not providing and you’re not a real man. If you do work enough but show any emotion that’s not a “manly” emotion (anything involving tears outside of a funeral or during Old Yeller or anything that’s too excited) then you’re not a real man.

I could write a whole dissertation on how young men get sucked into that whole toxic ideology due to the promises of being able to have a family and a house. And it’s all a fucking lie.

  • It’s not terrible now, but it’s still not where you’d want it to be. I installed Fedora KDE spin on a surface pro 7 early this year and didn’t lose as much battery as you. Palm rejection is not where it should be but is better than it was 5 years ago with a few tweaks.

I’m not a big tinkerer anymore so someone with time and energy could probably do a better job with it. I think my personal biggest problem is that I did it on an external drive just to test it out and lost interest. I never use the damn thing anyway, Linux or not. I just don’t touch a computer outside of work except for my phone and some mini PCs I’ve set up as gaming consoles.
