Can you explain to me, an Idiot™, what that would mean for me in practice if I switched? Would I be able to use the play store? What about my bank’s app, or something that uses location, like Grindr?
Okay, someone talk me down from the ledge here. I’m not techy, but I’ve been on Fedora for over a year, and dual booting since like 08. But the biggest hurdle back in the day for me was that my wifi was so hit or miss, even when it worked it was slow as shit. That and Netflix not working are what kept me from going full Ubuntu in like 09/10.
Am I going to have to go back to long ass Ethernet cords? Fuck, my laptop doesn’t even have an Ethernet port :(
From what I understand there was some technic reason behind it, but I hate it. Kde works on a laptop or desktop, but on a small touch screen it’s horrid. Gnome is more intuitive for a small device like that, and would let you use it almost like a tablet. C’est la vie, but I do think I’m going to try bazzite at some point
SteamOS is immutable. Each update wipes that kind of that. You can do it, but it’s a pita getting things back the way you like just for the next update to take it away. I’m familiar and comfortable switching DEs, it’s how I figured out I like near stock GNOME so much, by distro hopping and then DE hopping. It’s just an unfortunate part of steamos that they decided to go with only one DE and not give people a few options, but I don’t think they intended the desktop mode to get enough play time for it matter.
You can switch distros, but every update wipes it and puts you back with kde.
I’ve been considering switching my deck to bazzite, tbh, because I prefer gnome so much, and I like being to use desktop mode when I’m out. I got a tiny Bluetooth mouse keyboard combo that looks like a remote or flat controller. I’m the only one who drives in my family, so I spend a lot of time just sitting in the car, waiting at doctors and stuff. It’s nice being able to take just one device and work on school work or something.
Good to know! Thank you for explaining it.
Not desktop PCs
I would very much so run it on my laptop, tbh, if it used GNOME. Lol
Help dissuade (or confirm) a fear here. Could this be the first step to a sort of Androidization of steamos?
even so your money isn’t FDIC insured if you’re using apps as your main way to bank.
They need to be insured like bank accounts. Everyone I know that makes less than 50k a year is getting their shit direct deposited to cashapp and using cashapp like it’s their bank. If they go belly up in a financial crash, it’s going to be like the great depression, but only for already poor folk
I always mention whenever I see libro.fm brought up: if you don’t have a local store you want to support for whatever reasons, Firestorm in Asheville, North Carolina is a fantastic refuge for the local queer community, it’s a worker cooperative, and they’re struggling to survive. Please consider them if there isn’t another local place in your own community. With the big book stores and then Amazon, a lot of communities don’t have a physical local shop anymore, so if someone has a plug for their local, I think it’s worth making on these kinds of threads.
