  • SSD’s as far as I know mainly degrade from writing, not so much from reading or idling. If you fill an SSD, delete all files, write again, delete, etc, that is when they can wear out fast. If you’re just stacking on top slowly filling it and occassionally reading from it, it should theoretically last for many years. I don’t buy brands i’ve never heard about before and I read many customer reviews. Slightly higher price for way better reviews wins. Reviews like “it’s too slow” are not very relevant to me. Reviews like “I used it twice, got very hot and smelled like fire, broke, lost all my data”: those are the important ones. I never buy latest generation tech, I buy older generations. They’re cheaper, but more importantly they have more review information available about what you can expect from it slightly longer term.

I avoid buying anything from aliexpress, amazon, … out of principle, don’t want to support those foreign (Europe) giants. Any other webshop might get my order if they seem okay to me.

  • It’s quite easy without docker to get lots of it running with a dietpi install. Runs on rpi and alike, but also on any “normal” old low end pc. Just select jellyfin, arrs, … It handles it all for you, no need to learn Docker (I know people will argue about the advantages of docker, which are valid points, but ease of installation is more important to many people). The only difficulty remains the streaming outside your own LAN (because it’s risky). VPN, tailscale, … there’s options but it always keeps on feeling risky to open up outside LAN. Local setup for jellyfin can be really really easy tho, if it’s just for yourself and you mostly watch at home anyway… And in some jellyfin compatible app like Finamp and Streamyfin you can just download a few music albums, episodes or movies to your phone before you travel…

  • what’s the reason the plugin is not in the main branch? Are there possible issues with the plugin branch? (data loss?) Is there a plan for the plugins option to become part of main branch in the future? (i don’t want to break running things if a bit of patience for features would do just fine)

  • I’m no expert, but this podcast series seems to suggest Von Braun was mainly very focused on shooting rockets to the moon and fiddling the right guys to get crazy amounts of funding for that goal. I’m not saying he wasn’t a nazi, he was, but exterminating jews etc was probably not his mean focus in life… In the Von Braun case it was propaganda towards his own leaders, to get lots of money. The reason he’s well remembered is not propaganda but because what he tried actually worked out very well and was the basis for pretty much every rocket since. If he’ld happen to live in Soviet Russia, he would probably have become a member of the communist party, whatever would get him more money/free labor for shooting new trials towards space.

  • Not OP. I’m willing to learn Docker, but I just can’t get it going. My machine is permanently connected through nordvpn, I use meshnet to access it from other devices if I’m not on local wifi. The docker + VPN doesn’t work. Docker fails to download anything from docker hub, every request times out. Any instructions to bypass it looked very difficult, manually editing subnets or something, I feel uncomfortable with. Disabling services, then disabling VPN, then installing docker stuff and then restarting services and VPN also seems silly. I got lots going throught dietpi (many nicely embedded services), though it’s holding me back for example from running jellyseerr

  • If you properly use firefox personalised the way you want it, it gives you shitty unusable websites in Europe too. Banking says no, newspapers being buggy to unreadable with certain script blocking or cookie refusal, disable adblock to continue windows etc, it all exists here too. I always try ff. If really needed I open the shitty site in edge and afterwards return to ff… Also public (tax payer funded!) flemish radio and tv for example is completely unusable in ff with proper settings, works “perfect” in edge or chrome. German and Dutch public TV and radio works fine in ff tho.
