No, it is a terrible assumption. English is the de facto lingua franca (wow, four non-English words on a row) of the world, and specially on the Internet.

That relies on human brains that are trained. LLMs are not human brains. “Training” them is not the same thing as teaching humans about something.

Circular reasoning. “LLMs are different from human brains because they are different”.

Also, why did you felt compelled to add the adjective “human”? Don’t you consider that gorillas, dolphins, octopuses or dogs are intelligent, capable of learn new things?

Human brains are way more complicated than just a bunch of weighed correlations.

And that is the problem of your argument. You seem to believe that intelligence is all-or-nothing, that anything that hasn’t a human-level intelligence is not intelligent at all. Of course human brains are more complicated that current LLMs, nobody has ever disputed that. But concluding that they aren’t and will never be intelligent because they aren’t as complicated is a huge non-sequitur.

It also matters because that would be a truly amazing, world-changing thing if we could create intelligence out of thin air, some statistics, and a lot of data.

We do it routinely. It is called Education System.

EEE doesn’t need to be an intentional attack. They only seek profit.

• It is profitable to adapt an already mature protocol like XMPP or ActivityPub instead of creating their own from scratch (BlueSky is creating their own protocol, and they’re still in beta and probably will never catch up to Threads because of this).
• It is profitable to create new features that increase the engagement of the users. And since they don’t care for the community, only for themselves, these features are never released as open source and incorporated into the protocol.
• And if it’s profitable to wall their instance (like WhatsApp using XMPP but not federating with anyone else) or to close it (like Google killing Google Talk), they will do it. They will not care if their actions negatively affect the rest of the fediverse.

Meta, on the other hand, is sleazy but full of determination.

Do you think that Facebook is going to have only one instance? What I expect is that they will have a “main” instance for regular users, and then they will offer instance-as-a-service (infrastructure, hosting, customization and even admins) for corporations: a Boston Celtics instance, a McDonald’s instance, etc., all federated with the main Facebook instance. I guess you can describe them as a walled garden, but once the Facebook-verse becomes mainstream, it will be a much larger garden that the few of us who decide to defederate them.

And then there is the issue of Chromium-ification. Once Facebook reaches a dominant position in (their walled garden portion of) the fediverse, they will implement their own features on top of ActivityPub, leaving us with an inferior version.

If lots of instances start defederating them, then their users are going to start complaining to them that they don’t understand why they can talk to some people, but not other people.

I don’t think so. The most probable result is Meta (and maybe Google, Amazon, etc) running the mainstream instances, and sn alt-fediverse of smaller, tech-savy instances that defederate them. Most people will have only an account in the Meta-fediverse, and only a minority in the alt-fediverse or in both. Similar to most people now having a WhatsApp account, and only a few using Telegram or Signal.
