My first thought watching the show was how is this produced by Apple. Apple would be one of the first companies to have severed workers. Apple is a really secretive company, employees and teams are intentionally kept in the dark just like the different departments at Lumon.

On iOS I’m using OutRun. It provides basic activity tracking, which is what I care about. I don’t need a social network.

With the forced return to office, your time is wasted on getting yourself presentable in the morning and then commuting to and from the office. This should be considered part of your working hours if being physically present adds so much value, employers would pay that cost. In reality no employers would do this, as they know being in the office isn’t worth 2 hours of your working hours.

Proprietary software is also really dogmatic. Steve Jobs famously didn’t support flash on the iPhone, there also was no direct access to files/file system in the UI for a very long time. Tim Cook told someone’s Mom to just buy an iPhone to access iMessage. There’s too many user hostile dogmatic positions from Apple.

I think this has nothing to do with open source vs proprietary, but rather specific individuals having power/control over the software to force specific decisions.

I’m using Feedly Classic on iOS. I would like to move off of it, but I have yet to find any other RSS client which presents the articles in a card like view which you can vertically swipe through to mark them as read.

Feedly themselves abandoned this UI for an infinite scrolling list on their main app. All other RSS clients I tried have this similar UI, which I feel is really poor.

The predatory credit cards in the US should be not legal. They are exploiting people who don’t have so called “financial literacy” and encourage wasteful spending.

In Europe the US style credit cards don’t really exist and people just have debit cards. Also there is a social safety net, so people don’t have to rely on keeping money in the bank for when they become unemployed.

In capitalism everyone has to exploit their skills/strengths for money. Whether that is your body doing manual labor, sex work, or your mind doing knowledge work, it is at the base the same activity.

The point of the 4day workweek is to reduce your working hours, not do 4x10 hours.

You can also discuss adjusting your commuting times to minimize time spent on the road while still benefiting from being in the office with other employees.

The FOSS contributions from companies mentioned is only at the kernel level. And a lot that use the kernel, but with proprietary blobs for their hardware. I suspect that is because kernel/embedded development is hard and costly.

Most of the dominate OSes people use, with the exception of Windows, is based on an FOSS kernel, with then the layers above and applications being proprietary.

These software systems are being used to lock people in to the specific platforms and perform user hostile behavior. So while having the kernel be FOSS, it doesn’t result in user freedoms imagined by FOSS, it just companies reducing their costs.

There’s some truth to it. I’ve seen devs not clarify something from the designs with other stakeholders due to lack of social skills. You end up with something they implemented to the spec, but makes no sense it reality.

I have problems where when my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro will have been “asleep” for days in a backpack and then I try and use my Bluetooth headphones on another device, it will connect to the asleep Macbook.

I solved it by running a small program that kills Bluetooth when the laptop goes to sleep.

Doesn’t this waste more power being connected rather than actually sleeping? With a laptop lid closed, there’s no screen to show notifications on. What’s the point of this?

But for their laptops the support has dropped to the lowest in years. Some intel MacBooks no longer get the latest version after 6 years.
