I probably should have used ‘smaller chips’ instead. another idea would be using ‘thinner phones’ or ‘lighter phones’. i was a weird writing headspace when i wrote that and liked the flow of going from ‘bigger’ to ‘smaller’.

In addition, it would be useful to have a dead mans switch function as well. For example, it uploads the livestream to a private server and a timer starts for a predetermined amount of time. The uploader has to enter a passkey or do a mfa or some similar security mechanism to stop the timer before it runs out. If it does run out or too many incorrect attempts are made, the uploaded video gets forwarded to a list of contacts, created by the video taker. Perhaps to a bunch of press contacts, civil rights groups, family members, next of kin or maybe a lawyer in the event of an incarceration.

Here in America, they might also shoot the camera, you know, in self defense.

Bigger monitors, smaller phones, higher color depth, lower latencies, customizable window decorations, chronal themes, AI, blockchain, more devices, trackers, architectures, platforms, malwares, internet protocols, programming languages, human languages, ads, ads, ads, ads, doom, power saving, content, content moderation and I’m sure there’s plenty more reasons that might contribute to the growth.

Not saying I like or want all those things, simply that they might be contributing to size increases. Part of me wishes we could go back, then i fire up windows xp pro sp3 on an eee pc netbook i have that miraculously still works and i remember why i prefer to stay in the present, at least until AI kills us all.

Yeah I had heard about that with some phones so I asked specifically for an unlockable phone, unlockable from verizon and from android and the rep assured me it was, blatantly lying. I’m poor sadly and rely on my moms family plan so i really had no choice in the end.

I use Signal almost exclusively. The rest of those I don’t trust which doesn’t really matter to me because I don’t know anyone who uses them anyways.

Only differences are that I am stuck with Android because Verizon, I have Element but no connections on it, firefox instead of librewolf (bc lazy), arch-based instead of arch and I don’t use/need immich and home assistant.

I have an OSM account and even resolved a note or two. I’ve cleared every SC quest within a mile+ from my apartment and for the most part things look accurate. There are a couple fixes that need done but I also have severe ADHD. I absolutely WILL mess things up in OSM. That’s why Street Complete is perfect for me, it removes all possibility of me making catastrophic changes erroneously.

For example, a library near me was torn down and a new one was built across the street from where it was. The old ones location is the new ones parking lot and the new one is where a business used to be. The road and sidewalks around them were also redone in a slightly different layout. I looked into correcting this and quickly learned I’m not capable of fixing it in OSM. I could try. However if it can’t be done in about 45 seconds, I wont finish what I start. I left a note instead, so hopefully someone with that capability does and I can verify it with SC if that ever happens.

It isn’t FLOSS and I think it uses and adds to the aggregated anonymized tracking data from Google. I could be wrong. The developers I feel try too hard to push a mystical connection with the app. Still, it certainly has taken me to amazing places I never knew existed, that are right by where I live. It doesn’t show third party ads but can be annoying with the system it uses to try and sell tokens for the app to be profitable for the devs. That might just be me being cheap though. I can’t afford to spend money on an app at this time so having a full page ad appear every third journey gets old real quick. I really can’t complain though, for as much as I have used it, for free, it has provided a lot of entertainment and adventure.

My car died and I’m not currently employed due to disability so I’ve got nothing better to do than to walk around. I combine Street Complete with Randonautica to find new places to go. The black lines used for borders could be that. I’m not saying it is, just that it might be close to the amount used by roads other than rural highways.

If you are technically inclined, there’s QGIS. It’s a steep learning curve but it is capable of doing ANYTHING as far as maps are concerned. Okay, maybe not anything, I admit it’s above my skill level to use effectively. You can import data sets with it, effectively it’s more of a map aggregation and editing tool. It’s far more capable than OSM and you can work offline once the data sets are imported.

There’s also Marble, not the same thing as the other suggestion I see commented. It’s got a version for QT and GTK and some appimages out there. It’s not as polished. In fact, it’s kind of like MS Encarta Atlas, just not really modern. It has a bit of the ‘old internet’ feel to it, if that makes sense.

You can still pay to watch an AI enjoy the coaster if you stand in line for 2 hours.

i go to https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/ which is not really an app and it can be a bit wonky at times but it works better than every mobile app i’ve seen.

the desktop version of stellarium is the only worthwhile open source program i know about.

i think qgis might have the ability to do everything you require, however the learning curve is somewhat steep.

it allows you to import data from various maps, including openstreetmap, NASA and many more.

i believe there are free/open source topographic layers that can be imported or ways to add specific data.

it can draw layers, lines and shapes on top of each other with varying translucency and colors.

it can show non-mercator map projections such as stereographic, othrographic or even more obscure ones like the waterman butterfly or some of the ones from the list at the bottom of this page: http://www.quadibloc.com/maps/mapint.htm

if you are doing this for a fantasy world map and not earth, it might add even more difficulty but i’ve read people on forums claim they could do it, using another program with qgis and on windows only. i don’t recall much else since the windows requirement was a block for me. it’s probably possible to create the shapefile from scratch.

it has the ability to customize aspects of maps and mapped datum in many more ways that i am incapable of properly explaining, describing, using or understanding. i also have cognitive/developmental disorders, so it might be easier for others, however for me, it’s a map creation program i get lost trying to use.
