5·5 days agoYou can get very fancy new alarm clocks that don’t need internet, skill issue. I’m convinced consumer grade IoT tech is some kind of irrational boomer exhibitionism thing

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What are your favorite privacy-friendly FOSS tools for daily use?
2·6 days agoNothing could be worse than an Electron client. Honestly for me it’s XMPP > Delta Chat > Matrix > SSignal/Telegram/etc. Matrix integrations (apps) don’t even work on any client and they moved the bloated server improvements into a walled garden

2·6 days agoCorrect me if I’m wrong, but I heard that Matrix client is lagging behind the others in terms of cryptography?
To be honest, Yandex’s proprietary services are irreplacable and significantly better than Google. Many more languages too.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•FSF announces Librephone project
91·11 days agoVery ambitious, hope something comes of it. The focus on enhancing (?) compatibility between Lineage and the device isn’t what I expected.
XMPP, but also Delta Chat! The Webxdc apps for Delta work in XMPP client Cheogram despite there being no cross-compatibility between the networks. It can access ordinary email servers so long as they were not set up maliciously (Apple, M$, Gmail, etc). It can do a couple things XMPP cannot, but it’s not suitable for anyone outside close friends and family. I basically only use it for email, automation, and other personal matters. XMPP is for general use and can replace Discord. The Movim project looks very cool they have a community here also join their XMPP chat. Cheogram services can connect to the regular phone network.

1·11 days agoAsk in the Sharkey Discord (sorry that’s the only place they are) if any better forks have arisen than Sharkey yet. They’ll be frank

Technology@beehaw.org•Why aren't Linux based mobile OSes more popular?
18·11 days agoHardware is too locked down. Open source chip platforms are only starting to be developed now after decades of computing. It’s all been running off the same architectures from monopolists. Linux phone devs like PostmarketOS work in such a tiny box that AOSP guys get much further. That is what I have gathered learning about it past few years anyways.

91·12 days agoFairphone looks really bad after reading some of the GrapheneOS forum threads covering them. Calyx is still on hiatus over the security patch thing
These projects are fun to hear abt because I always go “damn I wish I heard about that six years ago” only to find out it is emerging from 8 years of developmental purgatory. So in a way I got to skip the wait
