If you delete the word ‘Texas’ many of us would probably just see this as unfortunate. If you’re over the age of 30 you probably grew up without ANY air conditioning, even where the temperature exceeded 100F a few days a year.
I’ve never been to Texas, so maybe this place is more like the Sahara than the east coast US.
Even a 20% pay bump doesn’t get an employee that likes their current job if they’re already near $100k (and not in NYC or similar cost).
Under no circumstances though is the problem a ping pong table.
Apple and other companies with web browsers are probably our biggest hope. People will complain if websites just ‘stop working’ one day because of their browser choice.
That said, I’m probably fooling myself. PECO.com, a huge electric company, doesn’t work unless I’m in incognito mode. I think it fails if you are signed into another corporation’s Microsoft 365 account. But they don’t seem to care.
I do wonder how much of this was evenly dispersed. IE: did slaves or indentured servants or the Irish keep working?
I’m reminded of an Indian fries of mine who one told me ‘India is better than most countries; everyone has servants’… and took way to many minutes to see the contradiction.
Is there a definite union/labor upswing…… or am I just noticing because I’m on antiwork?
These kinds of posts are useful reminders. A similar one last year is the only reason I know to pay for Obsidian. I started using it for personal stuff… and when I’d started using it for work I’d forgot on (if I ever knew) that it needed a commercial license.
Contractors make all these issues muddy and provide easy loopholes.
Generally a company will sign on a contractor with specific requirements. If the contracting company can no longer financially meet them, such as due to unionization, the contract is cancelled.
The rub is probably that the contract terms are not achievable while being fair to the end-of-the-line workers. I’m not sure how to fix this.
I’ve accidentally caused this myself. I put out a publicly funded contract with stiff terms to ‘keep the contractors honest.’ What that ended up meaning is that the contractor became a horrible place to work since they cut corners, and the company still makes their money. That contract was eventually canceled due to documented violations, so then all their employees were just plain unemployed.
I tried to nuke it too… turns out reddit has been ignoring delete and edit requests. I think they are rate capping the requests.
After running powerdeletesuite multiple times with all kinds of settings, I could still find comments of mine not deleted.
I also requested a GDPR set of account information. ALL of my deleted/edited comments are still there.
Maybe my area was poorer than average over something, but we had no AC and I didn’t know anybody who did. If it was 100F, we went to a matinee because it was air conditioned. Mailmen still delivered even on those days. Granted, that is probably on average less weight.
But as I said, I’m not in Texas either.
