I"m new to linux and would like to know how to do this. I’m using KDE/Plasma 6 and none of the SDDM login screens work. only Breeze works.
would love something like this instead.

I don’t really use VLC anymore so I’m not aware what the issues are as far as tiling goes. I watch stuff via the terminal with mpv. works great with tiling and haven’t had any issues with it.
my go to was Fark. I know it still exits and maybe I’ll start using it again but man that site was great.
yup it’s a challenge so I had to compromise. you’re right though. here’s the result:
I’ll probably change it today to a different colorscheme.
lol I kinda wish I didn’t read your comment, been playing around with it all morning. it’s infuriating cause the CSS can change colors for everything else but that ONE thing is tied in with with the tabs at the bottom.
yeah that’s a bit more work I need to fix up that I got tired of working on. in the kitty.conf it’s color4 but while changing that to black does fix it at the bottom it makes the all the other text black. so I’m still going through all the colors to see how to just turn off those white backgrounds. lol there’s 255 color settings in the conf.
yeah, I know, I have the link go to a site that provides several fmovie links to the other versions.
I’m planning on moving away from Vivaldi. The friggin sync feature is absolutely busted as you’re constantly having to reset your password cause for whatever reason Vivaldi freaks out and thinks you’re using the wrong password and locks you out or it simply just doesn’t sync most of the time. you can tell it to remember the device, tell it to remember the password and it says “yeah…maybe.” The reason I’ve stuck with it is cause I like the customization and having everything right there in the browser.
All that being said if you know of an option that has just as much customization, a better sync, and isn’t proprietary I’m completely open to suggestions.
edit: decided to go with librewolf. I’d like it if I could get the CSS to put the address bar/navigation at the bottom like I had it in Vivaldi but right now I CSS’d it to be as minimal as possible.
if you’re referring to the thing above CMUS it’s not a picture browser, it’s Yazi a file manager. It’s fast and I love it. I’m gradually teaching myelf to move away from gui’s so I can better learn terminal command lines.
but with Yazi you can use it as a picture browser as not only does it show previews like in the image but you can also increase the size of the preview or fullscreen it. I also use osxiv if I want a picture to open on it’s own.
also doesn’t help when CEO of said company isn’t a fan of testing or code reviews and IS a fan of crunch and speedy development. One of the reasons that whole mcafee snafu also happened. He believed development at Mcafee was too slow.
playlist-dl I have installed with snaps. I just download audio/playlists off youtube and couldn’t find anything better.
starterpage: https://github.com/rozodru/starterpage
Panel: heavily modified default Plasma panel
file manager: yazi
launcher: ulauncher (for whatever reason rofi doesn’t play nice with my setup)
terminal: kitty
shell: oh my zsh!
music playe: cmus
theme: a combined modification of Dracula and Tokyo Night
yeah mine is only 4gb too. you’ll be more than fine. I mean I’m on a laptop lol and pretty much every game i’m playing is on max settings pulling down 80+ fps.
sure:
cpu: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H(16) @ 4.30ghz
gpu: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 Mobile
ram: 16gb
SSD: 500gb
as far as Bazzite goes I lookd into it, seemed like something more for handhelds like the steamdeck. there was no live usb version so I didn’t really bother to try it out.
CachyOS has a pretty good development team and combine that with Plasma that has it’s own development team I’d say it’s in good hands. Compare that to cinnamon which is like one dude and once you get into the nitty gritty of it you quickly find how lacking it is.
One example, if you’re on a laptop and use a lot of public wifi (I do for work) you deal with captive portals A LOT to connect. on Cinnamon/Mint it was an absolute headache to try and get those things to pop up and connect. It was more of a Cinnamon issue than anything else.
on CachyOS with Plasma I don’t have that issue. It tells me that I need to connect to a portal and will open it and connect to it for me.
combine all that with Arch and it’s just a breeze. everything you need is right here: http://aur.archlinux.org and this applies to all Arch distros. it’s essentially a database of everything you can install on an Arch distro. no need to go googling stuff, it’s all right there. combine this with Octopi (package manager) it makes it way better than Mint IMHO.
And if you have Nvidia you’re doing yourself a deservice by staying on Mint. I think the most you can use on it is the Nvidia 535 drivers. anything above that you’re going to crash Mint. on Cachy i’m on the 555 drivers and my games have easily doubled their FPS. I can play Elden Ring and Helldivers 2 on maximum settings and pull down 90+ fps. games like WoW or FFXIV i’m getting over 100 FPS. On Windows I’d get maybe 30 to 40 FPS on the exact same rig.
The main reason I switch to Cachy was because of the development team. I was also planning on checking out Nobara but again, it’s one guy, so I felt more confident going with Cachy.
you might have problems with it on Mint. I tried using it on Mint and had a very bad time with it. Mint isn’t great with nivida cards if you’re using one.
If you really want to use Hyperland and something that installs and that you can use that’s just about as easy as Mint I’d suggest CachyOS. that’s the one I moved to after using Mint for a bit. gives you the option to install hyprland while you’re installing Cachy. it’s faster than Mint too.
yup that’s me now too. Linux, Lemmy, Mastodon, and Vivaldi Email. Even went old school and decided to download my music again which wth playlist-dl and cmus makes it so easy. find a song/album/playlist I like and just rip it right to my library.
It’s just amazing how easier things get when you decide to step outside the norm. What I love about Linux is you can think “hmm, I kinda want to do this on my PC” and boom, someone has already thought of it and made it possible for you.
it’s the reason I made the move from windows. don’t regret it. My computer just runs so much better now that i’m using linux. easily doubled the FPS of all my games.
I dig it, looks clean.
I’ve been debating for a week or so now moving to i3 from kde/Plasma but man I FINALLY got it where I like it and FINALLY was able to get a tiling script working with kde/plasma that I’m like ‘ugh should I switch?’
but yeah looking at yours i’m more tempted.
