Not every Jellyfin user is also the server administrator. If someone sets up a server and shares that server with 5 people, most of those users aren’t concerned with the privacy implications of how they connect to the server; they just want to consume content as easily as they do with Netflix, Disney, etc.

Seems pretty handy. So far the extension works pretty well.

In testing out the Firefox version of the extension, I found that it would be nice if there were a “copy to clipboard” button near the “Subscribe” button for users who just want the RSS URL. I host a FreshRSS instance so the “Subscribe” button doesn’t do anything for me. Triple-clicking the URL works to highlight it all, but a single-click copy button would be a nice QoL improvement.

Could try hosting a Multi-User Dungeon (MUD). I tried to host an Evennia server last year but could never get it to work properly. Wasn’t a big deal though cause it’s not like I had any friends who wanted to play, lol.

You could use PiVPN (you don’t need to install it specifically on a Raspberry Pi – this is just a handy all-in-one software solution). It supports both OpenVPN and Wireguard standards. Forward the relevant port in your router configuration, set up a single user for yourself in the VPN settings, and then connect via whichever client you prefer (OpenVPN if you use OVPN, or Wireguard if you use Wireguard).

I’ve used it before to access locally-hosted services from outside my home network and it gets the job done with fairly minimal setup.

Did you try running a scan for malware? I usually use ClamAV. It’s a simple, FOSS anti-virus scanner for Linux. Can run it from the terminal or install a version with a GUI if you’d prefer that.

Relying on flatpaks seems like a bad idea.

A more reasonable take might be: don’t install flatpaks willy-nilly without first verifying that they’re maintained by the original developers (or an authorized third party, which is sometimes the case). The same way I wouldn’t run apt install <package> without first checking the package info to ensure I’m installing a legit package (if I’m not already familiar with the specific package I’m installing).

I guess I’d probably pick “money” because I am generally risk-averse. I might already have incredible luck, but I don’t gamble, so how would I know? I’ve been incredibly lucky in non-gambling endeavours (my health, my family, my career, etc), but if asked to pick between being stochastically lucky and being guaranteed a certain level of comfort (and thus being able to provide for my family) for the rest of my life, I’m gonna pick the latter.

Summer of 2020. Lockdown was in full effect and I was working from home. I wouldn’t say I had a lot of extra free time (my kid was 1 year old at the time, lol), but I spent many hours that Summer tinkering with various projects, and that led me to eventually adopt Linux as my daily driver on all my machines.

I’ve dabbled with Linux since 2005, but was never savvy enough to completely ditch Windows until 2020.

I’d recommend Cheese (e.g.: apt install cheese) since it requires virtually no setup to start recording video and photos.

Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) also works for this purpose, but requires more setup, generally.

Depends on what you’re trying to do with the webcam.

If you just want to take pictures and videos, you can use Cheese.

If you want the webcam to be accessible to other devices on your network so you can view it remotely, you can use Motion (requires a small amount of configuration, but afterward it Just Works)

I follow Blender on Mastodon and, about a month ago, they started this campaign to see if they could double the amount of donations (from approximately 1% of users to 2% of users), and it’s been decently successful so far just by putting “Can you donate?” banners in more places (and posting memes about donating on their social media).

In my experience, you don’t even need the dedicated Jellyfin client. Just opening it up in a web browser works out of the box, so that’s potentially one less thing to download/install/manage for the clients.

That said, I’ve never tried to access Jellyfin from an iPad/iPhone/Mac so it might not be as seamless as my experiences on Android/Linux based devices. But I imagine they’d be fine; just test it out before you hit the road.

I dunno if VLC can do “Pipewire output”, but I think it does a lot of the other stuff you mentioned. I use it on my desktop (Mint) and my phone (Android) and it suits my needs at least.
