the content in larger subs has gotten significantly worse. like i said, i only really browse a niche hobby sub, and the content there has remained just as good as ever.

i think that most people here (myself included) really like that lemmy is so small, though i can see why it could feel like a problem to fix. it doesn’t have the advantages of infinite content like other services do, but the smallness means anyone here really wants to be here and is interested in discussion. it’s tight knit! i feel like people who actively want a reddit alternative have searched and already heard about lemmy, and i wouldn’t exactly want the general user base to be here considering how bad they can be haha.

what kind of content is there? memes mostly?

like i said, niche interest. i still browse reddit, but it really is only 1-2 subs i spend time on now, really just the one. as soon as battlejackets become an interest with my fellow lemmiers (??), i’ll be out- but that’ll probably never happen lol.

honestly. i’m still stuck to reddit because of the content only, and if i found a suitable alternative for that niche i’d finally be free to leave. i hate reddit- i hate the app, the “features”, the admins, all of that, but i LOVE the content itself

imo the novelty of john oliver will wear off soon, and people will want regular content again. so long as mods stay firm that regular content is not allowed, users will be dissatisfied and lower their engagement. though it’s not a perfect plan (people could just use different subs), it’s better than nothing

same. i’d like to spend most of my browsing time here on lemmy rather than reddit if possible, but i doubt i’ll fully leave anytime soon. unless my favourite communities (r/battlejackets, r/visiblemending, r/posthardcore, etc.) migrate, i’ll be going back from time to time for them and their like minded user base

as in, you don’t object to them being shut down by reddit? if that’s the case, how come? i understand your experience with them was not the best but many other users have been very happy to use 3rd party apps in recent years, and having them forcibly removed by reddit has been pretty upsetting for many of us.

niche hobby subs are absolutely why i suspect i’ll not truly be able to leave, unless they were to migrate to lemmy or somewhere else. though hopefully i’ll be able to move my general browsing here instead, it can be hard to find those same like minded people on a whole new platform :/

as for the hosting costs, i’d hope that’s not a big issue for admins seeing as a large portion of their new users have come from reddit apps they paid to use, sometimes on a monthly or yearly basis.

while i have been liking my time here, i can’t say i’ll never go on reddit again. i’d like for lemmy to become my primary browsing platform, but there simply isn’t my favourite niche communities on here- in particular r/namenerds, r/battlejackets, r/posthardcore, and all the bullet journalling subs. unless those communities migrate, i’ll still go on reddit (yes, mobile) to engage with them, since those are some of my favourite hobbies, even if i’m hoping to spend more time with lemmy.
