Sounds like a token gesture at best. The value of moderators is way over hyped. The real moderation happens in the upvote and downvotes that posts and comments receive.

I still go there when I want to answer something that I know there are posts there. Also some products run their user communities on Reddit but I have a much more utilitarian attitude towards Reddit. My focus on participation is over here.
If Reddits pricing was reasonable I would not find this objectionable but the way the Apollo developer spoke about this, the API pricing was meant to kill third party developers.
I hope the fediverse succeeds. But it’ll need to do it on its own, not on the back of a dying Reddit.
I agree. I dont get why people use things like discord or slack to discuss stuff especially with lots of users.
Every day I use Reddit less and move more of this sort of interaction over here. To the extent that I can find communities for my interests, I’m consistently dropping the use of Reddit. It may take some time but I’m no longer a Reddit fan boy.
As far as I’m concerned, Reddit is taking ownership of something they did not create, foster or contribute to.
Sounds silly and counter-productive.
If it’s not around, it won’t be because of the current controversy. It will be because there are better alternatives. Lemmy is one of the contenders.
Microsoft is just as bad or worse than Reddit.
This is not a race. It’s going to be a fast walk. If in a year Reddit usage stagnated and the fediverse grew dramatically the effort was a success.
The mods have no power or say. They will be run over. It’s not their platform and their contributions are voluntary. Reddit will do whatever it wishes.
I have no intention of unsubscribing from Reddit. The recent move that company has taken has made me hostile to them as a platform. I am far more probable to engage over here and just lurk over there when I need to find the answer to something. To the extent that I can I want to help the Fediverse takeoff and replace Reddit and twitter.
Twitter is not social. It’s a platform for people that have large followings to get their message out. It’s why the media sort of embraced it for a time. It’s why artists and “influencers” use it. It does not matter if those folks have anything intelligent to say. In most cases it does not matter if what they say is stupidity. It will still get engagement. Reddit on the other hand is all about the topic and the quality of the post. Personalities or # of followers does not matter.
A large part of the value of Reddit is in the user base’s hands. This idea that social media sites monetize user-created content without giving back to the user base has been around for a while but with Reddit it’s more obvious because it is a topic-specific discussion site.
I maintain my account for reference, but rarely visit unless I’m searching for something unavailable here. All my interactions take place here.
